Shake True Hoops at Bulldog Interactive Fitness for Youth - Fall 2008

At Bulldog Interactive Fitness for Youth, we have been given the opportunity to provide basic basketball education for an hour a week to youth who attend Bulldog.

We have a strong emphasis on fun while teaching the fundamentals of the game. Because a lot of the participants are new to the sport, we spend most of our time breaking down the building blocks of basketball. Ball handling, lay-up and shooting techniques and the human kinetics of basketball are what we spend the majority of our time teaching.

Because most of the participants are in the very early stages of their basketball careers, we make sure to provide a fostering environment and take care to show the fun aspects of the sport as opposed to only severe and nose-to-the-grindstone work ethics that are so important in the mid-to-later stages of a basketball career. Playing games such as Dribble King, Bump, Pressure and relay races are an effective way to increase basketball skill and knowledge while having fun.

Of course there is also an amount of time spent breaking down the aforementioned techniques. We understand that people are only going to play a sport as long as it is fun, and mostly fun is had when people succeed. In order to succeed, a foundation of skill has to be in place, so we make every attempt to instill that foundation which we then reinforce with games involving skill.
Our initial run at Bulldog is 10 weeks, ending the week of November 25th. At that time we hope to renegotiate and continue this partnership into the future.
